Job Description Details:
In accordance with physicians' treatment plans and according to established procedures assists with patient
examinations by performing and documenting basic clinical services necessary to provide for care, comfort and safety
of patients at Physician Practice locations. May perform a variety of clerical duties in order to support patient and
Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.
High School Diploma or GED. College preferred.
Associates Hired After 1/1/14: Graduate from an accredited NCCA Medical Assistant program.
Licensure / Certification:
Current certification with: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA),
American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Healthcare Association (NHA), National
Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). AAMA certification preferred.
Associates Hired AFTER 1/1/14: Graduation from an accredited program AND certification by an NCCA
Current BLS (Basic Life Support).
Previous direct patient care experience preferred.
Knowledge of medical insurance, and third party billing preferred.
Special Skill / Aptitudes:
Demonstrate communication skills necessary to deal effectively and tactfully with a variety of patients and
Ability to stand/walk for up to 80% of work time. Ability to bend, stoop, twist, and/or pull in order to
assist and/or support patients up to 100 pounds in turning, arising. Abililty to push wheelchair patients up
to 300 pounds.
Organizational skills in order to multi-task, work under time constraints and adapt to medical situations.
Strong computer skills necessary, with prior experience working in various electronic health information
based systems such as: HealthQuest, PowerChart, NextGen and FirstNet.
Demonstrated experience in medical terminology.
Basic knowledge of Current Procedure Terminology (CPT), ICD-9 coding, ICD-10 preferred.
Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of
hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
Duties / Responsibilities:
1 Provides clinical support to assigned clinical team including chart assembly, room set-up, preparation of
patient for physician examination, assistance during exam and follow through of physician orders and plan of
care and tracking of ancillary tests.
2 Performs assigned clinical procedures including phlebotomy and laboratory on-site testing,
electrocardiograms, tympanograms and other procedures as demonstrated through annual competencies and
certifications as applicable. Demonstrates ability to identify abnormal versus normal test results and
according to policy and procedure records test results and communicates test results to the physician.
3 Administers medication as directed by physician.
4 Responsible for patient chart documentation in accordance to policies and procedures.
5 Triage patients, follows established protocols. Assures appropriate advice is given to patients and families.
Assures Managed Care Guidelines are adhered to in terms of patient access. As required, reinforces discharge
instructions with patients under the supervision of the physician.
6 Schedules diagnostic procedures, provides referrals to appropriate physicians and as necessary, notifies
Admitting Department and appropriate hospital personnel of any inpatient admissions.
7 Maintains adequate medical supplies in clinical areas, stocking all exam rooms daily. Assures adequate level
of inventory at all times. Cleans and maintains equipment.
8 Participates in staff meetings, educational in-service programs and completes required continuous training and

waivers and provider status of eligibility. Obtains prior approvals and precertification as needed.
10 Understands basic coding which includes ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes.

11 Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patient rights policy. Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in
all aspects of patient care and actively supports risk management.
12 Demonstrates an understanding of appropriate emergency response and codes protocols and has the ability to
adapt successfully to emergency medical situations, i.e., remaining calm, providing appropriate direction, etc.
13 Implements quality control programs by reviewing and logging all quality controls and acting appropriately
when results read out of range. May be required to participate in proficiency testing to ensure annual
