Yale University Research Assistant 1 HSS in New Haven, Connecticut

Position Focus: Supports research and clinical care in clinical trials, public health service-related areas by screening and recruiting subjects for studies. Conducting structured interviews and performing collection of specimens or medical supplies in the field or office or mobile Community Health Care Van (CHCV) or main office. Provides data gathering and recording. Provides outreach and linkage to health care, ongoing case management, and supportive services to those newly diagnosed with HIV or those with an HIV diagnosis that may not be compliant to their total care plan. Works collaboratively in office and local health area. This position is primarily responsible for the Syringe Exchange Program of the Community Health Care Van (CHCV), which is a mobile primary and infectious disease care van serving vulnerable populations in various inner city neighborhoods in New Haven. Outreach and testing at community centers homeless shelters probation/parole sites and drug treatment centers with high risk populations to seek out those who are unaware of their HIV and HCV status and those who have a substance use disorder.

This position will perform routine testing for HIV, HC, drug toxicology, breathalyzers, glucose finger sticks testing, and other testing as needed. In addition to testing, provide health education and referral to early intervention strategies.

This position requires working a minimum of two evenings per week and one weekend day in the Greater New Haven area.

Essential Duties 1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 3. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 4. Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1: Demonstrated customer service skills with the ability to be compassionate, confidential, and sensitive to issues such as mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse, infectious diseases (such as HIV and HCV), and challenging social circumstances.

Required Skill/Ability 2: Ability to move boxes, lift storeroom supplies/equipment, and arrange for ordering and removal of hazardous waste.

Required Skill/Ability 3: Proven bilingual language ability in English and Spanish.

Required Skill/Ability 4: Ability and willingness to obtain a CDL license to drive the Community Health Care Van within 12 months of hire date.

Required Skill/Ability 5: Ability to extract and compile data using various systems including Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Phlebotomy skills with a willingness to obtain blood, breath, and urine specimens for various tests, ability to be fully trained in such skills within 6 months of hire. Experience with the CareWare and EPIC systems, working with high risk individuals in an inner city environment, knowledge of the New Haven roadways, and hazardous waste disposal.
