Duties

To provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and family members of the Vietnam era, World War II, Korea, Lebanon, Panama, Grenada, Persian Gulf, Global War on Terrorism; bereavement Counseling to parents, spouses and children of Armed Forces personnel who died while in service to their country and family members of Reservists and National Guardsmen who die while on duty are included; active duty, reservists and veterans who provided direct emergency medical, mental health, mortuary or unmanned aerial support services to personnel involved in combat operations or hostilities; and, those who were sexually assaulted/harassed during their military service who have not achieved an adequate readjustment after the military service. Readjustment counseling includes individual and group counseling to veterans and family members over issues of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and related psychological difficulties, marital and family issues, substance abuse, employment, military sexual trauma, homelessness, bereavement, and other issues impacting upon a veteran's ability to successfully re-enter civilian society. This task is accomplished in collaboration with other members of the Vet Center or other interdisciplinary treatment teams both within the Department of Veteran Affairs or with other community/government social services agencies.

Work Schedule: M-F 8-430, some evening hours required and the possibility of working some weekends.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States.

  • Education: Have a Master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for master's degree in social work.

  • Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience: Providing services for Veterans including psychosocial assessments, treatment planning, short-term, solution focused counseling with individuals and families who may be in crisis.

Grade Determinations:

GS-11: Applicant must possess a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree professional social work experience in the field of health care Social Work (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic - medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master's Degree in Social Work.

OR

Applicants may substitute education for the experience at the GS-11 level. To meet the required 1 year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting for the GS-11 level, in addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required 1 year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. (You must submit a transcript to receive credit for this education.)

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
